    What’s interesting about Zara?

Amancio Ortega Gaona, owner of the Zara chain, is the richest man in the world, according to the November 2015 edition of Forbes magazine. His famous textile empire, Inditex, has earned him a fortune of nearly $80 billion. But he didn’t get there all on his own. It should be remembered that Amancio’s wife, Rosalia Mera, was also one of Zara’s founders.

Born into a poor family in the village of Monte Alto, in Galicia, Rosalia left school at 11 and became a dressmaker.

In 1975, the chain’s first store opened, offering the pieces she had designed on her own kitchen table. The brand was meant to be called Zorba, in honour of her favourite hero, but because a nearby bar carried the same name it instead became Zara.

Rosalia Mera was one of the wealthiest among the world’s most affluent self-made women. In 2013, Forbes magazine rated her Spain's richest woman and ranked her 66th among the world’s most influential women and 195th among those with the biggest fortunes.

During her life, Mera shunned the media. In addition to running a business and raising two children, she was president of the Paideia Galiza foundation, dedicated to combating the social exclusion. In 2013, she spoke out on a public issue for the first time, strongly opposing a push by Spain’s conservative government to introduce an anti-abortion measure. She also voiced opposition to cuts in education and health. She died in 2013.

Zara: founded in 1975. There are now 2,085 stores in 87 countries, 452 of them in Spain. Each year, Zara releases about 10,000 new designs.

Zara is the brand and within this brand there are a variety of lines with different names.

The first Zara store opened in 1975 in A Curuna, Spain by Amancio Ortega. Zara is now owned by Inditex which is one of the largest retail groups in the world. The group also owns Massimo Dutti, Zara Home, and Bershka.

Zara has over 2000 stores across 88 countries, and just the creative department of Zara employs over 200 designers.

The name Zara conjures up images of a glamorous and graceful Spanish woman, does it not? Be that as it may, it was not the original name that founder Amancio Ortega had in mind. In fact he originally named it Zorba, inspired by Zorba from the movie "Zorba the Greek"! However, the story goes that there was a restaurant a few blocks away that was also called Zorba, and to avoid confusion, Ortega re-arranged the letters of his new fashioin store name (the moulds for the printing had already been made) and came up with Zara.
