What’s interesting about Puma?
Rudolf Dassler was an outgoing and talkative man, a born salesman. His brother, Adolf (Adi), however, was the quiet type. A sportsman, he spent his time designing shoes (a craft learned from his father, a shoemaker). In 1920, Adolf opened a small business in his mother’s laundry, in the German town of Herzogenaurach, making ??hand-sewn sneakers. His brother Rudolf joined soon after. The company thrived, but the brothers fought. They disagreed over business, politics and even their choices of wife.
Rudolf left the company in 1948 to open a rival store in the same city, but across the river. He originally called it Ruda but changed it to Puma (presumably for marketing reasons). Meanwhile, Adi renamed his company to Adidas. Both did well at first, though sport was not as popular as it is today.
Rudolf made ??a big mistake, however, falling out with the coach of the German team just before the 1954 FIFA World Cup. The team went on to wear Adidas sneakers during the competition, beating Hungary in the final to emerge champions. Since then, Puma has never been able to rise above its rival.
A few years ago, it became very hard to find Puma shoes, except in a few outlets. The brand was considered dead. However, it was bought by France’s PPR – the owner of Gucci – and has returned to top stores. You can read much more about the history of Adidas and Puma in the book "Sneaker Wars" by journalist Barbara Smit.
Puma: Founded in 1948 in Herzogenaurach. Its products are available in 120 countries. Employs more than 10,000 people.
